NEW YORK- All Rise, Tanaka Tuesday, Gleyber Day, Release the Kraken, Gardy Party, Sevy Sunday have all become staples of Yankee fans’ vocabulary.

While the Yanks have dealt with more than their fair share of injuries this season, one seems to sting a little bit more than the others. Luis Severino has not pitched yet this season as he recovers from shoulder inflammation in his pitching arm.

The 25 year old Dominican Republic native posted a 19-8 record with a 3.39 ERA in 2018, just a season removed from a 2.98 ERA in 2017. Sevy has been the Yankees’ ace for a couple of years now and has been an arm that they have missed tremendously over the course of this season. It was announced recently that he would be making his long anticipated season debut tonight against the Angels.

The Yanks get a great young arm back just in time for a postseason push. Severino’s playoff career got off to a rocky start; however, the young righty has been able to enjoy some postseason success in his short tenure with the Yankees. After giving up 3 runs and 4 hits in ⅓ of an inning in his first start in October, Severino has bounced back nicely. It seemed as though Severino was able to become much more comfortable as he posted back to back starts in which he lasted at least 7 innings. The following year Severino once again was called on to start the, often heart palpitating, wild card game where he shut down the Athletics for 4 innings.

His performance could also give manager Aaron Boone some options heading into October. Sevy could become a reliable longer reliever or the Yankees’ skipper could utilize him as an opener which he has done with Chad Green frequently over the course of this season. The return of Luis Severino is very exciting news for Yankees fans and should make people excited about the Chase for 28.
